- Know what antiques are; old and fairly rare things. Old is more than 100 years old. That said younger things can still be very valuable and be worth collecting.
- Learn your niche of collecting. Study. You will then be able to spot a good deal when you see one.
- Buy what you like and would want in your house (if you're not reselling it for a profit).
- Be sure that it is an authentic piece. Do some research. Check for flaws.
- Does it wabble? Does it have a burn(not easy to make go away)?
- Does it look old? If it in fact is an antique, you should see some signs of wear.
- Is it refinished (in most instances lower the value)?
- Determine value. Get second opinions.
- Ask the seller if any repairs have been done, to know what you are getting. Also make sure the seller can guarantee what is advertised. Getting it on paper would not be wrong.
